LOCATION

Melbourne is well known around the world as a film friendly city, offering a diversity of locations, from bustling streetscapes featuring a variety of architectural styles, cafes and restaurants, to beautiful lush parklands, waterways and harbours.

The city is also home to the world class Docklands Studios Melbourne, featuring the very latest in filmmaking technology. These state-of-the-art studios include five purpose-built sound-stages with adjacent make-up and dressing rooms, production offices and holding bays.

Melbourne is a wonderfully exciting and vibrant city and the City of Melbourne team is here to help make your next filming activity a success.

Parks and gardens
Melbourne’s parks and gardens are second to none in Australia. The green network of more than 560 hectares covers wide open spaces, stunning floral displays, magnificent tree-lined pathways, ponds and fountains. Australian native landscapes from the newest parks contrast with the majestic trees of the 19th century, while sports grounds sit alongside leafy walking tracks.

Waterfront City
See Melbourne from a different angle – take to the water and take in the stunning views as you pass riverside parks, historic buildings and bridges, rowing sheds and the modern central city. Head into the emerging Docklands area, which is also the best place to see the city lit up at night.

Streets and Laneways
Central Melbourne has 15 distinct precincts, each with its own character and style.  Chinatown, the Greek Precinct, the 'Paris end' of Collins Street and Little Italy (Lygon Street) provide an international flavour, while theatres, galleries, markets and cafés are located throughout the city.

Melbourne’s famous laneways and arcades provide a mysterious and historic journey through the heart of the centre and sit between wide-open streets, shopping malls and skyscrapers.

City of Melbourne's Commitment
The City of Melbourne is committed to supporting a vibrant, thriving and professional film and television industry, whilst ensuring that a balance is maintained with the needs of our local city stakeholders.

Playing host to many notable feature films, documentaries, television series and television commercials over the years, means that our team can provide advice and expertise on how to maximise your time in Melbourne, including providing information where specialised filming requirements may need to be accommodated. We are proud to continue to facilitate a growing number of productions who choose Melbourne over other locations.

The benefits that filming bring to the city are abundant. Productions not only assist in promoting our city across Australia and in overseas markets, but also deliver a significant investment in local products and services. This is achieved via the production of sets, costumes, sourcing lighting, food, make-up and the numerous jobs generated by each production.

The City of Melbourne’s objective is to make your shoot in Melbourne as straightforward and obstacle-free as possible.
