Monash University, VIC

Dr Fasseli Coulibaly is a structural biologist whose work focuses on the assembly and virulence of viruses. He graduated with a PhD in protein crystallography from the University of Paris-Sud in France in 2003 and, after a postdoctoral position at the University of Auckland, established the Structural Virology laboratory at Monash University in 2008.

His research helped advance our understanding of the assembly and evolution of RNA and DNA viruses and appeared in Cell, Nature and PNAS. He also contributed to push the limits of X-ray crystallography to analyse infectious viral microcrystals directly purified from infected insects, which laid the foundation for a Gates Foundation-funded study to engineer microcrystalline armours as a novel vaccine platform.
